Pair sought in Rocky Mount home invasion, shooting

Police on Tuesday were searching for two men who broke into a Rocky Mount home late Monday and shot and robbed the homeowner.

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — Police on Tuesday were searching for two men who broke into a Rocky Mount home late Monday and shot and robbed the homeowner.

Joseph Jerome Maxwell, 42, was in critical condition at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville following the incident, police said.

Two men brandishing handguns burst into the home at 515 Edgecombe St. after 8 p.m. and demanded money. One gunman fired several shots, hitting Maxwell in the head and body, police said.

The men fled with an undisclosed amount of money, the phone from the house and other items, police said.

Two other people in the house then ran to a nearby magistrate's office to call police.
