Pair driving drunk with children in car, police say

A man and woman were arrested Thursday morning after Raleigh police stopped them for driving drunk on Interstate 440 with three children in their car.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A man and woman were arrested Thursday morning after Raleigh police stopped them for driving drunk on Interstate 440 with three children in their car.

Moses Smith, 49, of Portsmouth, Va., was charged with misdemeanor child abuse, aiding and abetting impaired driving and having an open container after consuming alcohol. Police said he allowed Portia

Mason, 41, of Washington, D.C., to drive his car while she was impaired. She was charged with DWI. Police said one of the children in the back seat was Smith’s godchild.

Smith serves on a neighborhood commission in Washington, D.C.

Both are scheduled to appear in court next month.
