ABERDEEN, N.C. — Two people have been arrested after a 5-year-old girl was killed early Monday inside a Super 8 motel in Moore County.

The Sandhills Sentinel reports a woman and her boyfriend rushed the child to the emergency room at FirstHeath Moore Regional Hospital Emergency Room, where she was pronounced dead.

According to Aberdeen police, the couple, Ashley Ann Vinesett and Cody Jerome Davis, both 34 and from Spartanburg, S.C., were charged with felony child abuse, and Davis was also charged with first-degree murder.

Davis is a convicted felon in the state of North Carolina and was released from prison in August 2020, according to the Sandhills Sentinel.

The child was assaulted, police said, and more information will be available upon the release of an autopsy report.

Both were being held Tuesday at the Moore County Detention Center.
