Over 4,000 beagles need a home home, and a Triangle-based organization says you can help.

Triangle Beagle Rescue of North Carolina says they've been asked for help and are willing to commit to fostering the remaining beagles from Envigo's medical dog-breeding facility in Virginia.

The organization, which is 100% foster-based, does not have any open foster homes.

A People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) spokesman says the beagles will require a lot of love since they weren't getting it previously.

"Those dogs have never put their paws on grass. Many of them have never seen the sun. They've never had a toy. They've never had a bed. They haven't had a family," said PETA vice president Dan Paden.

The spokesman said PETA had someone work undercover at the facility where the dogs stayed and found food contaminated with maggots and animals kept in feces, which he says are long-standing animal cruelty issues in the facility.

"It's wonderful that they’re getting all these opportunities, but it’s also entirely foreign to them," said Paden.

Triangle Beagle Rescue of North Carolina says anyone who is a previous adopter or foster willing to help with a laboratory beagle should email amy@tribeagles.org. Those who have not previously fostered or adopted from the oranization can start the foster approval process here.

Steps to becoming a foster includes applying online, phone interview and home visit. Fosters must be in the Triangle or Greensboro area.
