RALEIGH, N.C. — More than 3.1 million North Carolinians have already cast their ballots. That's almost the exact number of total early ballots (either by mail or in-person) cast in 2016.

With less than a week until early voting ends, previous records are being shattered.

"I think it's great . It's really great. I think it speaks to where the country is right now. I think we're all trying to make a difference," said voter Alvin Rowe.

Rowe is one of thousands of North Carolina voters who weathered the lines to cast their ballot over the weekend.

"It's a lot of people, but it's good that, that many people are getting out to vote," said voter Bever-Leigh Barthelus.

State officials said about 42% of eligible voters have cast their ballots.

Officials said voters should come out as soon as possible. As the election looms closer, wait times at the polls will only increase.

Early voting ends on Oct. 31.
