RALEIGH, N.C. — During Tuesday night's city council meeting, residents of Glenwood South shared concerns over the noise and violence.

Residents say there has been some changes to help address these issues – like additional lights, trash cans lining the streets and more officer patrols.

However, some residents say that is not enough for the popular spot for entertainment and nightlife. They would like to see more officers patrolling during the weekend.

Recently, Raleigh's police chief had also echoed these concerns, saying she was concerned about the alarming increase in violence and weapons in the area.

There have also been repeated calls to lower the noise volume from the bars and restaurants.

On any given weekend, around 12,000 people converge on Glenwood Avenue. There have been arrests, fights, and vandals. Some people have even suggested shutting down the area.

Woody Biggs, a resident, described why he doesn’t feel comfortable walking near Glenwood South, saying, “Ten years ago I never gave it a second thought to walk down Glenwood South later at night. I do now. Safety is a concern. The city has let the area get wild and out of control.”

WRAL News did find out the city is currently working on reviewing ideas on how to improve safety and decrease the noise.
