Hello everyone. I'm meteorologist Peter Sherwood. In the severe weather center. Tropical storm Ophelia continues to batter North Carolina, bringing with it some strong gusty winds and pockets of heavy rain. This storm system will continue to push towards the north and we are going to see clearing as we head into this evening. And tonight, we have flood potentials in place for our eastern counties. That's where we're likely to see the greatest risk of flood for all those areas outlined in red. We also have flood watches in effect as well as flash flood warnings. This storm system is bringing a lot of rainfall at times near two inches of rainfall within an hour. So flooding is going to be a major concern for today. If you encounter an area where there is a lot of standing water, just go ahead and find an alternate route. You don't want to drive through any standing water. You just don't know what's under beneath it. We are going to rack up nearly 3 to 4 inches of rainfall in addition to what's already out there in our eastern counties. In addition, 1 to 3 inches of rainfall will be possible for the central part of the state, we've seen the rain come down and we've also gotten those strong gusty winds. And here's a look at how we've seen things play out for this morning, trees down out there in Durham Chapel Hill, as well as Carry. You can see this is from one of our WRL viewers sent in this photo out of Carry and that gusty wind did topple down this tree in this area, impacting that fence. We are going to continue to get some strong gusty winds throughout the day. Upwards of 40 MPH for the triangle areas to the east where we are going to see some of the heaviest of the rainfall could see winds around 45 MPH. So the rain is coming down. It's also gusty out there with those strong winds, we do anticipate showers associated with Ophelia to continue to lift towards the north. Pockets of heavy rainfall will continue to move into Virginia this afternoon and we're going to see drier conditions across the sand hills as we head into the five o'clock hour, drier conditions moving in for the triangle right around the nine o'clock hour. And tonight we are going to dry things out, tomorrow is going to be a warmer and better day for outdoor activities. So we are going to get our temperatures just stuck in the sixties for today, only climbing to 64 degrees due to the rain. The wind and the cloud cover that is out there. But tomorrow temperatures will rebound into the seventies and then we're at 82 degrees on Monday, highs in the seventies will persist as we head into Tuesday and for the rest of the week notice our rain chances are expected to increase then as well.

A powerline pole, possibly struck by lightning, is on fire in Atlantic Beach.

Ophelia really bearing down on the coast right now That's where we've seen the heart of these impacts so far Yes Wr Grace Holland is live on Atlantic Beach Grace We the last time we were with you we saw that that power line had been on fire What is the status right now Yes So that actually blew within the last few minutes Really loud pop that was heard from that You know this is just the first effects that we're starting to see of all these hours of sustained winds  So right now that power pole is just sort of hanging in two pieces right there and there are firefighters on scene I spoke briefly with one fire department official who just kind of told me that they've been monitoring this for about an hour Now They got the call around 645 five The road is open as far as I can tell they're letting cars through But I do see a firefighter who is sort of helping direct traffic just through this area That pole of course doesn't cross the road but it's just right there on the side The main concern that they really had was this driveway right here This is very close to that pier that we were in the last hour and this driveway is where people normally come in and out So they're not letting anyone in and out that direction  He gave us that officer gave us some directions on if we needed to get out of here how to do that safely So we don't go under these lines but this just goes to show I mean it's stuff like this This is why there are sections of the beach that don't have power right now is because of things like this And of course those crews are continuing to work on these lines and try to get it restored But at this point the outages are still happening So we're going to continue to keep you updated and monitor this situation Yeah of course this is a very active situation and grace I know you're going to stay on top of the course Thank you very much
