Joel's Top 10 Movies of 2022

10. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

This movie oozes with originality. Essentially, Nic Cage is playing Nic Cage. And Nic Cage has some lessons to learn about how he chooses to spend his time. It's surprisngly heartfelt, and we get a very different and awesome performance from Pedro Pascal as Nic Cage's biggest fan.

9. Barbarian

This horror movie - released under Disney's 20th Century Studios - has one of the most unique shifts in a screenplay that you'll find. The way writer/director Zach Creggers structures this film is completely out of left field. As a result, I found it to be one of the most unpredictable and witty horror movies in recent years.

8. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

As not a big fan of the original Puss in Boots spinoff, I had very minimal expectations for this one. They were exceeded greatly. The hook and character arc of the movie feels so simple yet so genius since it hasn't been done on this scale before: the pompous Puss in Boots is down to his ninth life and needs to learn to accept his own mortality.

7. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

I'll admit this is not a perfect movie. However, the obstacles that writer/director Ryan Coogler had to overcome to put this on the screen cannot be overstated. Wakanda Forever is able to address the real-life shocking death of Chadwick Boseman and weave it throughout the story in a way that I can't think of how to improve. This is also the best set of performances that we've seen from a Marvel movie, notably from Oscar frontrunner Angela Bassett.

6. The Banshees of Inisherin
This is another simple-yet-genius concept. The Banshees of Inisherin tells the story of adult friends who suddenly are not friends anymore. Just like all of writer/director Martin McDonagh's work, it's darkly funny because its unnervingly true. As we come to expect from McDonagh, the dialogue is sharp and colorful. I just wish the ending was a little more clear, but maybe that's the point.
5. Three Thousand Years of Longing
From legendary director George Miller, Three Thousand Years of Longing slipped through the cracks of 2022, likely due to level of strangeness it exudes. It is a movie that is small in focus and rather large in scope. Tilda Swinton plays a lonely professor and Idris Elba plays a Djinn (genie). Together, through their stories, they find what their purpose is in life. It has an incredible score by Tom Holkenborg a.k.a. Junkie XL, with a theme so beautiful that it sounds like it's always been in your life.
4. The Woman King

This is one of the better original action movies we've seen in awhile. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood and star Viola Davis are both at the top of their games for The Woman King, a fictional story based on the very real female warriors of the kingdom of Dahomey. The action is visceral and the story offers a lot to say about the value of life. This movie also has tremendous original music, spearheaded by Terence Blanchard.

3. Avatar: The Way of Water
James Cameron's Avatar: The Way of Water was more than worth the 13-year wait. Instead of rushing out a sequel to the biggest movie of all time, Cameron focussed on his family and other passions like exploring the ocean while slowly building out the story for a set of Avatar sequels. The Way of Water clearly reflects what Cameron has learned from his time away. After a shaky first act, the sequel settles into true beauty in terms of visual splendor and story. The final half hour is a swelling, emotional triumph. I wish there was a way for the Academy to recognize the types of digital performances that Zoe Saldaña, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, Britain Dalton and Stephen Lang give in this movie, because it is truly some of the best acting of the year.
2. Everything Everywhere All At Once
One of the most original movies of the year, Everything Everywhere All At Once uniquely tells the story of a first-generation immigrant mother facing a mid-life crisis. Played excellently by Michelle Yeoh, Evelyn Wang connects with other versions of herself — and her family members — throughout the mixed realities of the multiverse. The lesson of the movie — taught in an instant-classic performance by resurfaced child star Ke Huy Quan — lands as one of the biggest gutpunches you'll face.
1. Top Gun: Maverick
Top Gun: Maverick is so proficiently executed in every area that it's almost hard to truly comprehend its greatness. Tom Cruise's passion project oozes exactly that: care for the story, the characters and blockbuster-style filmmaking as a whole. The script by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie reaches the perfect point between comprehensive and tight. The editing and pacing of the film might the the best of any action movie every made. It features the best performance by Cruise, whose character of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is the representation of the dying concept of the movie star. Thanks to great supporting roles from Miles Teller and Val Kilmer, Maverick learns one of life's greatest lessons: to let go of what you cannot control.
