HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — The Orange County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday named Assistant County Manager Michael Talbert as interim Orange County manager. He will replace Frank Clifton, who is retiring Sept 29 after four years in the position.

Talbert has a six-month contract.

“The commissioners are confident Mr. Talbert has the skills, temperament and knowledge of Orange County to keep our work on track while the board undertakes a formal search process to select the most qualified candidate to permanently fill the county manager’s position,” board Chairman Barry Jacobs said in a statement Wednesday.

Talbert joined the county’s administrative team in 2010. He previously worked as finance director of Catawba County and county manager of Polk County.

“Orange County is experiencing some significant changes. I am prepared to make the transition as seamless as possible by providing guidance to the Board of County Commissioners and support to the employees, while maintaining strong ties with the towns, schools and other key agencies within the community,” said Talbert.
