Orange, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City schools cancel classes due to weather threat

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and the Orange County School District have both called off classes on Monday due to the threat for severe weather and flooding.

There will be no in-person or remote learning, the district announced. All on-site activities are canceled as well.

Around 8,000 customers in the area were without power at 6:30 a.m.

I had a bit of anxiety," said Elizabeth Raines, a parent of a third grader and a sixth grader. "I still have a bit of anxiety with omicron wreaking havoc on our community."

Despite the concerning rise in COVID-19 cases, Raines said she is glad the district won't return to remote learning.

Raines said her children are excited to return to school but that she is "relieved that we have an extra day to get our act together to give everybody a chance to get all their things together and get our sleep schedule back."

A flood watch is in effect for Orange County until 10 a.m., and meteorologists say the largest threat will be flash flooding, gusty winds and water on the roads.

"I am grateful that I will not have to have my children on the roads in the potential flooding and high winds," Raines said.
