Good afternoon. I'm meteorologist, Amy Wilmoth in the severe weather center. We'll watch the radar this afternoon for the potential for a stray shower or storm in our southern counties. We have a level one risk that includes most of Hope County, a good part of Cumberland County, including Fayetteville and most of Sampson County as well. This is really going to just be this afternoon that we see one of these stray showers or storms develop. So maybe for the bus ride home for the kids and then by the evening commute, things settle down and we should stay quiet overnight tonight. We have a better chance for rain heading into tomorrow. More on that in just a moment. I want to update you on the air quality for today. We are now a code orange air quality day. If you are sensitive to poor air quality, if you're elderly or you're young, you need to limit your time outdoors and this will be the case through tomorrow as well. This is for everyone with the exception of Sampson County and this is all because of some smoke moving in from Canada, from some wildfires in Canada. So you'll notice the hazy sunshine out there today. You can also smell the smoke at times, so definitely you can see the smoke over the area through today and this is going to continue into tomorrow as well. We're likely still going to have some smoke in the air and that's why we have the code orange air quality day for tomorrow as well. It's going to be very warm today. Highs in the upper eighties in the triangle, low nineties in Fayetteville and Clinton again. We'll be watching our southern county for the potential for a couple of storms this afternoon. Heading into tomorrow, we have a better chance for some widespread rain. The first half of the day looks pretty dry, maybe some showers in our northern counties. And then by the early afternoon, around two o'clock or so, we'll see some showers or storms from about Wake County and points to the north and then more widespread coverage as we head through the evening, commute some scattered showers and storms and this will continue even after sunset perhaps until around midnight or so tomorrow. So for today, we have mostly sunny skies with poor air quality that code orange air quality day for today. 88 for the high level one risk for severe storms in the extreme southern parts of the area. A better chance for scattered showers and storms Wednesday. Our high gets up to 83. It's cooler Thursday, mostly sunny with a high of 79 Friday, mostly sunny with a high of 83 87 in dry Saturday. And then a potential for another round of showers and storms by Sunday and Monday.

Oklahoma approved the nation's first Catholic charter school funded by public tax dollars.

In a historic 3 to 2 vote. The Oklahoma state wide virtual charter school board voted to approve the nation's first religious charter school funded by public tax dollars. This vote has put Oklahoma in a spotlight. No other state in the nation has been in before. Yes, Mr Pearson, the separation of church and state blurred in Oklahoma. This pathway teaching religion in a public school does, I think. Um But the first but the first step in motion for the dam to be broken of separation of church and state, the application comes from the Catholic Archdiocese of Oklahoma City and the Diocese of Tulsa to create Saint Isidore of Seville virtual Catholic charter school. A weighty decision. Oklahoma Attorney General Geter Drummond says is unconstitutional calling the move disappointing by board members who violated their oath to follow state law. The question was, did we stay in accordance with the oath that we had signed, which was to follow the constitution? Um And the answer was for me, it was a no, it was an absolute no, it doesn't align with the state constitution. And so we knew this was going to go to court president of the board was one of two who voted against the proposal. This has nothing to do with, with that belief about our, our friends and loved ones that are of Catholic faith. This has everything to do with the design. The platform that did not align well, did not serve special education students effectively and potentially allowed for some discrimination to be in place that didn't align with, with their core values. They wanted to push the, the matter to um the Supreme Court so that they could find this test case for the national scale to unfold. Governor Kevin Stitt and state superintendent Ryan Walters among the Oklahomans who stand with this decision. Governor Stitt calling the move a win for religious liberty and education freedom for Oklahoma. Walters says this further empowers parents allowing every Oklahoma parent to decide what's best for their child reporting. Kylie Thomas K five news.

A mother of four was shot and killed by a neighbor in Florida. Her family wants the woman who shot her arrested.

Especially in a case to this level. Sheriff Billy Woods addressing the pressure from the community to make an arrest in the days after the shooting, he says an ongoing feud between the shooter and victim AJ Owens led investigators to the quail run neighborhood, whatever the Children were doing. We do know that our shooter was engaged with the Children. However, whether it be she was yelling at them, don't know yet. Owens's own family shared their side of the story gathered at this church in Ocala on Monday. She took a personal item ipad tablet electronic device that belonged to a child. He tried to retrieve it. She threw skates at him. Pamela Diaz says her grandkids told their mom what happened when she showed up at the door. She was shot. Her Children ran to my house banging on the door asking for us to call the police. Ashley Remi lives across the street from the field where the kids were playing this woman has talked all of our Children in this neighborhood. The sheriff acknowledged there is a history of calls. He says much is still under investigation. He is asking for patience for the Children who he says witnessed their mother being shot. I just want to thank everybody for one little boy. Shared a few words in the aftermath, thanking the community and remembering a woman whose death has left four Children without their mother. What I'm asking is for justice, justice for my daughter. I did ask the victim's family, what justice looks like to them. They said the first step is an arrest to be clear. The sheriff's office has not named the shooter and their investigation is ongoing. They tell me they are working closely with the State Attorney's office and the facts will lead them to the outcome in Marion County. I'm Catherine Silver getting results. News six.

One of the residents injured in an apartment building collapse has sued the city of Davenport and the building's current and former owners, alleging they knew that conditions were deteriorating and failed to warn residents of the risk.

A lot of this stuff could have been prevented. You know, it had to come to this point right here where everybody is now not what was going on. Murray lived in the building from February of 2022 until March of this year. In the over a year, he lived there. He said he had issues with windows and doors not closing, no running water, trash all over the building. And a more despite this, he says maintenance only came once. They we're coming over there. Obviously, nothing ever happened. They never sent in their update this morning. City officials say they are investigating the collapse with the assistance of the fire marshal's office and Iowa's Department of Criminal Investigation. However, they say it's still in its initial stages. This is an active investigation. So details will be released when we can actually provide additional information. However, Murray says the issues in the building were so obvious. He's not sure how inspectors allowed the building to continue operating. I mean, he needs to say, you know what, you know, with no heat ac that's obviously not little Andrew Woold. The building's owner is facing a $300 fine from the city, which officials say will prevent him from avoiding the bill for demolition. However, Murray hopes Woold takes more responsibility for what happens you, you making money off of rent out stuff that shouldn't be rent out at all. So I want to kind of for the.

Former tenant shares problems in Davenport building

Family, friends and members of the community gathered to celebrate what would have been Tyre Nichols' 30th birthday. Nichols died in January after being pepper sprayed, tasered, kicked and hit with a baton by police.

This is putting a smile on my face. It's making me emotional. We hear you, we hear you, brother, you, Rob. Yeah, we love you, Roger, holding back tears. Watching all of Memphis celebrate the life of Tyree Nichols. I love this. I love this with a passion. You know, Memphis has its ups and its downs and this is definitely a up it's a feeling that Nichols's father Rodney Wells describes as he watched skateboarders, skate and Children dance in a full drum line. Commemorate his son. Civil rights attorney, Ben Trump acknowledged that June five is more than just nichols' birthday. Terry Nichols and Brianna Taylor. This prince and princess was born on the same day, June 5th, 30 years ago, dozens of people piled in for the evening to show their love. It make me feel like man, we can all come together and do something to prevent it in the future.

A dog at an animal shelter was caught on camera jumping over a wall so she could be with her friend. The two homeless pups were rescued from the streets together.

Me and another employee were walking through the kennels and we walked by and we had to like triple take like what's going on because two ties came to the front of a kennel to greet us. And we were like, what security camera footage cracked the case and we knew that they had to be together. Brenda climbed her way over the wall to join her pal Linda. We re watched the video that we have and I about died. I was like, this is truly magnificent. The pair came in as strays to Minneapolis Animal Care and control two weeks ago where the shelter has been near capacity. They say adoptions are down and surrenders are up 20% from 2022 which was a record setting year. I would say the majority of our cases are due to housing. So either people moving away, moving into places that don't allow specific breeds. We're seeing people experiencing homelessness that didn't before and are just in hard times. Surrenders aren't the biggest challenge at the Animal Humane Society. It's a shortage of vet techs. We probably have about two thirds of our vet tech staffing compared to what we had pre pandemic for the same number of buildings, which means we can't help the same number of animals. Large dog adoptions have slowed some too part of a trend seen nationwide. We all heard of the COVID COVID puppy and potentially if everyone who is thinking of adopting a dog in the next few years, got them at the beginning of COVID, you're going to see those adoption numbers spike and you got to see them drop before they level out again at Mac. There's no fee for adopting dogs. Seven months or older. We know it's not going to be easy to find them placement together, but we would love it if we could.
