JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Onslow County Schools briefly put three schools on lockdown Friday morning while authorities investigated a "potential but credible" threat posted on social media.

Onslow schools officials said Swansboro High School, Swansboro, Middle School and Queens Creek Elementary School were locked down. Swansboro Elementary and Sand Ridge Elementary were under a community lockdown, which means all outside activities were canceled until further notice.

Authorities later determined the threat originated from out of state and was not credible. The lockdown was lifted around 9 a.m.

Officials did not describe the specific threat.

The lockdown on the North Carolina coast comes two days after police said a 19-year-old man walked into a Florida high school with a rifle and killed 17 people. Police said the suspect, Nikolas Cruz, confessed to the crime after being taken into custody off campus.
