A day after she was named as one of four and the only woman to the crew for the Artemis missions to the Moon, Christina Koch talked about the opportunity -- for herself, NASA and mankind, with WRAL's Chris Lovingood.

<p>So this is exciting. This trip is setting the stage for our country's first lunar landing since the 70s. Obviously, we're gonna be testing out a lot of important instruments. What kinds of thoughts come to mind knowing that you are playing such a pivotal role in where we are taking the exploration of space for mankind. The main thought, the main feeling that comes to mind is an absolute sense of honor and privilege to be a part of this to contribute to humans. Return to the moon in a new way in a sustainable and responsible way and then applying those lessons to go to, to Mars is an awesome place to be. I had no idea when I joined the astronaut corps that this was gonna be my space destiny and I couldn't be more excited to contribute. And, and speaking of that, you know, we're just shy of the 10 year mark of when you actually joined NASA's 21st class of astronauts. I mean, does it feel like everything is just coming full circle at this moment when you made that announcement yesterday, it did remind me a lot of the day that we are announced as an astronaut class. The overwhelming amount of support that we receive is second to none. And it really makes both things crystallize. I know that day almost 10 years ago, felt surreal just like yesterday did. But what makes it feel more real is seeing the support of the other astronauts family and the whole, the whole crowd, everyone that's excited to go back to the moon to have humanity's um responsibility of exploring given to us and how sacred that is awesome day. And, you know, going to space. I mean, I i it's, it's awesome. I mean, you can't see it in my room now, but I have some space things that are around me right now. It's, it's such this awesome thing that it, it allows us to, to think about what might be possible for mankind in the future. But it's not easy. I mean, the physical toll that takes me body is something that's, you know, not everyone can handle. And so I wonder with all the things that you're into, I know you're into like backpacking and stuff like that. Um And clearly you have the intellectual prowess to do this with electrical engineering and physics. What keeps pushing you to want to go back to space? You're exactly right. I am someone who seeks out challenges that is no, no surprise to anyone. I love the mantra. Do what scares you and it almost seems like you're saying, hey, you've done this, what's keeping you back? This mission is gonna be a completely new challenge. And that is one reason why I'm very excited to be doing it and contributing to it with this crew. I think some of the new challenges are going to be the fact that this is the first time we've flown crew in Orion. So things are gonna change. When I went to the International Space Station, we had had human presence on the space station for almost 20 years and we hit that 20 year mark while I was on board. And what that means is everyone, the training flow the systems. A lot of that has been flushed out. You're gonna get what you expect to get. We do not know what this mission is gonna look like. By the time we launch, we're gonna be working with the engineers, the designers, the trainers all along the way. So to not get too tied to one thing to look forward to the teamwork of changing things for the better as we go. That's gonna be an awesome challenge to take on. And obviously, it's something you're gonna do. Like you said, as you know, as you go along with it, which is, which is great. Um So, you know, I talked to your former adviser over at N C State Steven uh Reynolds and he said that, you know, the teachers that he would speak to would say just how involved you were with your work. And so I wonder, you know, what was it at your time at N C state that made you want to perform at such a strong level? Because you know, he, they said, hey, you know, she said she wanted to be an astronaut. It was a crazy dream. And here you are living out this crazy dream. I have to tell you. Thank you. By the way, I have to tell you, I don't know where the maybe the drive comes from. If I had to cite something, I would say it comes from my family and the hard working people that they are. I got to spend my summers working on a farm in Michigan, which is where my extended family lives and and has a family farm and in that place, work ethic and contributing was just held in the highest of regards. And I think I took that back with me, but also I was just inherently interested in everything and I wanted to do it all and N C state offered that. So I got to try rock climbing right along with those electrical engineering team projects that were so challenging. I got to do the backpacking club. I got to do the sailing club. I got to do human rights um community service. I got to be in B G L A. I got to do marches. Um I got to go to other conferences at local schools. It was awesome. Everything. I could be a part of just meant so much to me and I wanted to soak it all up. And so if I had a moment in the day to fit it in, I usually try to, you know, we have a couple of wolf pack, uh, quite a few wolfpack employees at our station. I know they are just going to use us to rub it in to a lot of other people's faces when they. Um So uh let's talk about the the trip a little bit more. So what instruments are gonna be um are gonna be used on it? And um are you are any of these instruments any that you have designed? Because I know you've had a hand in multiple different instruments that NASA has used. Neat question. So there are a lot of instrumentation, things on the vehicle and a lot of those are sensors to understand some of the systems. So, you know, we have systems, life support systems, communication systems that operate to, you know, keep the humans alive, keep the mission going. But then like you mentioned, there's also instrumentation which is gathering data on the spacecraft itself and maybe even gathering scientific data like the radiation data. So for me, nothing that I designed in the past as a NASA engineer necessarily is on this mission. But one interesting thing is that I used to work on space science mission instrumentation. So, you know, the science gadgets that fly on planetary probes, earth orbiting satellites. One of those earth orbiting satellites is actually studying the van Allen radiation belts which we will be flying through on this mission and quantifying the amount of radiation. This van Allen radiation belts is really important for this mission design, both from the human factor and from the equipment factor because equipments in humans are both affected by radiation. So I like to think that something I worked on is helping to refine exactly how much radiation we're going to be passing through on this mission and contributing back to it in some way from my former life as an engineer. And you know, this trip, uh it's, it was, I believe it's a, it's a 10 day trip. I believe you, you blast off, I think it's four days from blast off to when you're traveling to the moon, you'll be orbiting around it and then you'll slingshot back using the earth's orbit to bring you back into the Atlantic. So, um I wonder with that. Um, what are you going to miss during your time? Because I know you've spent obviously again a lot of time in space. What are some of the things you miss when you're up there? Definitely, I'm, you know, for me, I don't necessarily need the creature comforts of earth. I wasn't missing a latte or anything like that, but I miss my loved ones and I think that even though the time is short the distance is long and it's gonna feel a little bit different being that far away from everyone that we know and care about. So that's probably the biggest thing that I'm gonna be thinking about. And what was I gonna say? Um, and with this, you know, I, I was, I've looked at the different videos of the, you know how Ryan will operate and stuff like that. Um And again, you know, even though they're, you'll miss your loved ones and stuff, you're, you're, you're pushing mankind forward, you're pushing it forward to test our bounds. And then hopefully, at some point possible moon base I believe is like what's gonna happen in the future and it will start to set up a column. You talk a little bit about the next steps of what you could be contributing to. Absolutely, you're exactly right. It's different going to the moon this time because we're going sustainably responsibly and we're going to stay, which means that we are going to utilize the full breadth of the science that the moon can offer us. And we're also going to utilize the full breadth of the operational and technological things that we learn about operating in a sustained way on the South pole of the moon. And apply those to going to Mars. You might then ask why Mars? Well, from a personal standpoint, I think one of the most important philosophical questions we can ask of our time is, are we alone. And I think the best way to answer that question is human exploration on Mars. And even of the moon, we learn about how our solar system formed from the moon. The moon is kind of like a rosetta stone for our entire solar system, which means it can be used to understand other solar systems which again might be places where life is harbored outside of our own. The inquisitive part of space exploration obviously is big. But, you know, I talked to a physicist or astro um astrologer not too long ago, astronomer. Goodness, I'm mixing up my words um back when I was in college and he said, you know, we have finite resources here on our planet and it is only natural that we have to seek out other places in which to tap into more resources. Why is that so important that people understand in terms of trying to find new materials, new resources for our planet? What we call insitu resource? Um utilization is a huge part of this mission. That is definitely something that could enable a future Mars mission because some of the things that we hope to do with those resources is to create the fuel and the oxygen that we need to actually conduct it. So it's a really exciting time and learning more about how we can do that and what's out there is a big part of this mission as well. Christina, it was such a pleasure to talk with you. I really appreciate you making time and I, I am going to be sitting there rooting for you when you're up there.</p>

I'm meteorologist, Kat Campbell in the wr a severe weather center. No more thirties in the forecast and we don't have a frost threat tonight so you can leave your plants be, temperatures are falling into the upper forties to lower fifties overnight. We've got a different wind direction and some more clouds that will fill in by daybreak tomorrow at the bus stop, it'll be in the low to mid fifties for most of the kids out there. So a mild start, but you may want to send your kids to school with an umbrella because by the time they head home, some of us are going to be dealing with a chance for rain during the afternoon. It's all due to this cold front. Approaching from the northwest. There's not a lot of moisture for the front to work with, but just enough and enough lift to squeeze out some rain. I think that rain chances would start in our northwestern counties around 11 a.m. through lunchtime. And then that chance is really closer to, to three o'clock here in the triangle. But that might be when the kids are heading home as we get toward 456. It would be south and east of the triangle with the best chance for rain. Rocky Mount, Southern Pines. I'm thinking you'll be in that 3 to 5 p.m. time frame for rain. It's not going to be a very heavy rain. There is a small chance of a thunderstorm embedded, but most of us will just see some pretty light rain. In fact, models are showing less than 5/100 of an inch of rain. So very tiny rainfall amounts from this event. We do have the Durham Bulls in town this week. And luckily the forecast looks good for all of their home games. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We've just got wonderful baseball weather. Temperatures will be near 70 for the first pitches and the rain should be over in Durham, the triangle by the time we get to dinner time for tomorrow evening, which means it's likely to be a dry game for us. Your seven day forecast show, some big changes are on the way though. We've got 74 for the high Wednesday with chance for rain Thursday just 72. So a small dip in our high temperatures more noticeable at night though we fall into the upper forties Thursday night to Friday morning, we're going with 47 as the low Friday morning around the triangle. And then once we get to the weekend temperatures begin to rebound. However, that will come with an increasing cloud cover mostly cloudy Saturday and Sunday. But back in the eighties by Sunday and even warmer next week, highs could climb near 90 a week from today.

WHAT THE DEFENSE DID WAS TRY TO TAKE THAT BACK. YOU HEARD THIS VERY INTERESTING LINE FROM TODD BLANCHE, THE LEAD ATTORNEY THERE FOR THE FORMER PRESIDENT WHO SAID SPOILER ALERT, THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH TRYING TO INFLUENCE AN ELECTION.
