One dead, one charged with DWI in head-on crash near Holly Springs

One person died and another is in custody from a crash in Wake County on Saturday morning.

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — One person died in a crash in Wake County on Saturday morning.

The head-on collision occurred near the intersection of Piney Grove Wilbon Road and Rouse Road close to Holly Springs.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the driver of a black SUV crossed the center line and hit another vehicle traveling the opposite direction.

Richard Williams, who was in the car that the SUV collided with, died at the scene. He was 65 years old.

The WRAL Breaking News Tracker captured video of two overturned vehicles.

Elthon Mendoza-Cervante, 29, the driver of the black SUV, was arrested.

Mendoza-Cervante was charged with felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired after a head-on collision in Holly Springs.

Mendoza-Cervante is in jail under $50,000 bond and has been charged with felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired. His first court appearance will be on Monday, February 27.

The Holly Springs fire department responded in addition to highway patrol.
