WHITAKERS, N.C. — One man died and another was injured in a Tuesday afternoon shooting, according to the Nash County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office said two men were shot at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday on Johnston Road near the intersection of U.S. Highway 301, which is also known as Johnston Road. It is near the Cummins Rocky Mount Engine Plant.

Deputies said while the shooting did not happen at the plant, the two men involved were coworkers there.

Family identified the man shot and killed as Quentin McNair, who died at the scene.
"I can't take this," McNair's sister wrote in a Facebook post.
Family members said McNair was a "great dad" to his 2-year-old son.

Deputies said Wednesday the motive for the shooting is still under investigation, and would not say if they found any weapons on-scene.

The other man who was shot drove three miles on U.S. Highway 301 and made it to Battleboro despite his injuries. EMS found the man with a gunshot wound and rushed him to the hospital.

"A second shooting suspect was found a few minutes later down the road," said Nash County Sheriff's Office Capt. Robert Bowen. "He was later transported by Nash County EMS, where he was flown to ECU Medical Center in Greenville."

Deputies said the person shot is in critical but stable condition. They would not say if they plan to press charges.

The sheriff's office said the two people knew each other and had an argument, which led to them firing shots at each other.

Cummins Engine Plant declined an interview, but sent a statement.
"Our thoughts are with him, his family and our colleagues," the statement reads in part. "The safety of our employees is our main priority, and we are cooperating with law enforcement as they investigate this matter."
