Fayetteville man found covered in blood charged in fatal stabbing of his grandfather, police say

Damar Dobbins, 31, has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his grandfather, George Dobbins, 72, police said. The younger man was being held Sunday night at the Cumberland County Jail without bond.

Fayetteville police officers were called to the Marathon gas station in the 700 block of Country Club Drive after reports of a man covered in blood at about 2:35 a.m., police said.

When officers arrived, they found the man and then went to his home after repeated attempts to get someone to answer were unsuccessful. When officers arrived at the home, in the 3300 block of Cranbrook Drive, they found an unsecured door and the body of the elderly Dobbins, who had been stabbed repeatedly, authorities said.

Police have not publicly identified a motive for the killing, but said both men lived at the home on Country Club Drive.

Lt. Gary Womble said the circumstances surrounding the incident were "concerning."

"It’s extremely concerning. (It's) very unusual that someone would walk around with what appears to be blood all over their body...walking around the streets that early in the morning," he said. "Needless to say, that is why it raises more than an eyebrow from us as to why we need to look into this matter."

The man covered in blood was determined not to be injured and was questioned by police. No additional suspects are believed to be at large.
