CLAYTON, N.C. — One person was killed and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash that happened Tuesday near Clayton.

According to a trooper with the NC State Highway Patrol, the two vehicles collided on NC 42 East near Clayton just before 7 p.m. Officials said one of the drivers, Thomas Schmidt, 30, of Kenly, was killed and the other was seriously injured.

Troopers also said the crash happened when a westbound driver, whose name is not being released, was passing another car and hit a vehicle head-on heading eastbound, killing the driver. The road was shut down for 2.5 hours following the crash and was opened again around 9:15 p.m.
