More than 21% of North Carolina's four-year-olds enrolled in the state's pre-kindergarten programs during the 2022-2023 school year, up from the prior year but still below the state's pre-pandemic highs, according to the National Institute for Early Education Research.

A 25-year-old man was killed and a 23-year-old man injured Thursday evening in a shooting on Griffin Street, Greenville police said. 

<b>GREENVILLE, N.C.</b> — A 25-year-old man was killed and a 23-year-old man injured Thursday evening in a shooting on Griffin Street, Greenville police said. 

Officers responding to the 600 block of Griffin Street about 9:15 p.m. found Willie Travon Smith and Deontra Deshawn Wilkes with gunshot wounds. Both men were taken to Vidant Medical Center, where Smith was pronounced dead. 

Wilkes was being treated<span style="font-size: 12px;"> Friday for gunshot wounds to the lower body and legs, police said. </span>

No arrests have been made, and police have not indicated what may have caused the shooting.
