OXFORD, N.C. — A man was killed in a series of crashes Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 85 in Granville County.

Highway Patrol troopers said an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed lost control and struck a guard rail in a southbound lane of I-85 at about 4:36 p.m.

Hunter Bryson Smith, 23, from Zebulon, was ejected from the SUV as it overturned multiple times and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Troopers said the crash caused onlooker delays in the northbound lanes of I-85, where two cars collided several minutes later. One of the cars overturned and one person was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Moments later, a three-car crash occurred in the northbound lanes. Several people were taken to Granville Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries as a result.

The cause of the fatal crash remains under investigation.
