One killed in Henderson wreck

Philip Michael Bunton died after his car crossed the center line and hit an embankment and then a tree, authorities said.

HENDERSON, N.C. — One man was killed early Wednesday in a one-car wreck in Henderson, authorities said.

Philip Michael Bunton, 31, of Henderson, was southbound on Southerland Mill Road at about 5:45 a.m. when he crossed the center line. His 2001 Pontiac Grand Am hit an embankment on the left side of the road, went airborne and struck a tree, authorities said.

Bunton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities haven't determined what caused the wreck, and the case remains under investigation.
