One person was injured in a shooting near an elementary school in southern Hoke County early Friday, according to the sheriff's office.

<b>RED SPRINGS, N.C.</b> — One person was injured in a shooting near an elementary school in southern Hoke County early Friday, according to the sheriff's office.

The victim, whose identity wasn't released, was airlifted for medical treatment. Deputies said that a suspect is in custody.

Investigators have been at the scene off Old Maxton Road near Hawk Eye Elementary School since about 1 a.m., deputies said. Hawk Eye Elementary has a Red Springs address but is in Hoke County.

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a school resource officer discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle at Hobbton Middle School athletic field. Authorities believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
