FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A 21-year-old man was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center early Friday after fire broke out at a home in west Fayetteville, authorities said.

Fire crews responded to 1123 Merry Maple Lane, off Wildwood Drive, at about 2 a.m. Firefighters were able to control the fire quickly, but the home was heavily damaged.

The 21-year-old suffered lacerations to his lower legs while trying to escape from the home through a rear window. His name has not been released.

The 21-year-old, another adult and two children were displaced. Investigators said the cause of the fire was unattended cooking.
