WILSON, N.C. — A man was killed Wednesday morning in a shooting near the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles office in Wilson.

Around 8 a.m., the Wilson Police Department responded to an assault and a robbery at the Wilson County Senior Center, at 1808 S. Goldsboro St.

Police said a man went into the center before it opened and demanded money from a female employee, whom he also tried to sexually assault. When the woman tried to get away, she was beaten, police said.

Some elderly women came into the senior center and interrupted the assault. The assailant forced them to lie facedown in an office, and he took one woman's car keys, police said.

While police investigated the incident, officers for the state DMV's License and Theft Bureau saw a man matching the description of the robber about a mile away, in the 600 block of Jordan Street, and a shooting ensued in which the man was killed.

The local DMV office is next to the senior center.

Police identified the dead man as 27-year-old Roy Anthony McAllister. They said items were found on him that belonged to the women from the senior center.

Authorities haven't said whether a weapon was found near him, however.

State Bureau of Investigation agents and Wilson police spent much of the day investigating, with crime scene tape blocking off much of Jordan Street.

"For it to happen here, that is not very common," nearby resident Jada Harris said.

Ron Hunt, Wilson County's assistant manager, said someone walked into the senior center before it opened Wednesday morning and robbed the director of the facility.

"Our staff is fine, and, at this time, the police are handling the incident," Hunt said. "We are just making sure our staff are OK."

Nakita Darden said she woke to the sound of gunshots and walked outside her Jordan Street home to see officers standing over a man on the ground. She posted a video to Facebook showing officers trying to revive the man, but it quickly became clear he was dead – he was put on a stretcher but wasn't rushed to a hospital.

"To me, from where I am standing, it don’t look good," Darden said in the Facebook video. "Why did you shoot this man? Why did you shoot this man?"

Darden said she later found out the man who was killed was her cousin.

"I feel like I'm in a nightmare," she told WRAL News. "I wake up to gunshots, go outside and see someone lying on the ground, with questions [as to] why is this happening ... later on to find out this was my family."
