BAHAMA, N.C. — A woman shot and killed by a Durham County deputy on Tuesday afternoon has been identified as 28-year-old Stephanie Wilson.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office said deputies were called to the 400 block of John Jones Road in Bahama around 3:30 p.m. for a report of a disturbance.

When they arrived, deputies said they saw a woman armed with a shotgun.

Officers repeatedly asked Wilson to put the shotgun down after she aimed it at them multiple times, according to officials.

Cindy Clayton, a neighbor, described the intense scene, saying, "All of the sudden I got a text from my neighbor saying there's a deputy coming down my driveway. All of the sudden there were more [law enforcement] cars, and more and more. They kept coming."

Ronald Jones, who has lived in the neighborhood almost 40 years, said it's a quiet neighborhood.

"It was very disturbing, because this is not the type of area where we see anything like this," said Jones.

Jones said he's had a few run-ins with Durham deputies over the years, but he doesn't want his personal experiences to cloud his opinion of the officers involved the shooting.

"I'm not saying they did anything wrong, but by the same token it can be very intimidating when it happens to you," he said. "And that's why I have these biased feelings. But as a general rule, they're usually pretty good people."

Wilson's grandmother spoke with WRAL News, saying the family is in shock. Dorothy Wilson, who lives in Warrenton where the majority of Wilson's family resides, says she's never seen her granddaughter in trouble before.

The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, which is standard for shootings involving law enforcement officers. Birkhead said the Durham County Sheriff's Office will also be conducting an internal investigation, including a use of force policy review for the shooting.

The deputies were not wearing body cameras because they have not been officially rolled out yet – so there is no video of the encounter.

One member of the Sheriff's Office is on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
