KURE BEACH, N.C. — Officials were investigating after two separate rescues at Kure Beach resulted in the deaths of two people on Wednesday.

The Kure Beach Police Department, Carolina Beach Police Department, Kure Beach Fire Department and New Hanover Regional EMS were dispatched to the J Avenue Beach Access around 7 p.m. Wednesday to a water rescue. Kure Beach police said a Kure Beach fireman and police officer were able to remove the unresponsive man from the water and began lifesaving measures, which were unsuccessful.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Kure Beach Police Department. Attempts were being made Wednesday night to notify next of kin. The NC Medical Examiners Officer will determine the cause of death, officials said.

The death follows an earlier incident Wednesday where officials responded to the G Avenue Beach access at 10:15 a.m. and pulled a swimmer from the water. That person also did not survive, according to The Associated Press.
