Wake Forest, N.C. — Officials are investigating after the body of a bicyclist was found Sunday in northern Wake County.
The body, identified as John Augusto, 51, of Raleigh, was found beside a bicycle along 13019 Creedmoor Road before 10 a.m., according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office. Officials did not confirm the cause of death but said Augusto was not struck by a car.
Tory Moore was returning from fishing when he noticed a heavy police presence and the body abandoned on the side of the road.
"All of a sudden you see something like this," said Moore. "I mean I probably won't even be able to focus today."
Before officials confirmed that Augusto was not hit by a car, Moore told WRAL he feared the biker may have been hit by a runaway driver.
"During this time of year when it's raining and it's foggy, you can't really see," said Moore. "You really have to be paying attention. Roads are slippery and there's not really any sidewalk or anything like that. It's just a dangerous road."
As deputies continue to investigate, neighbors say they will keep their eyes open, hoping that someone will come forward to authorities.
The medical examiner’s office will perform an autopsy to determine an exact cause of death.
