Officer shot at firing range in Pitt County

Deputies are investigating what appears to be an accidental shooting of a police officer at a college firing range, WITN reported.

BETHEL, N.C. — Deputies are investigating the accidental shooting of a police officer at a college firing range, WITN reported.

The shooting happened around 11:10 a.m. at the PCC Firearm Training Center on Ellen Farm Road near Bethel.

Pitt Community College spokeswoman said Vidant Medical Center police were using the facility for recertification training when an officer's gun went off as he or she was taking it out of the holster.

The initial report said the victim was shot in the leg.

The officer was rushed to Vidant Medical Center.
