GREENVILLE, N.C. — Detectives are investigating a dispute that escalated into an off-duty North Carolina police officer and a restaurant patron exchanging gunfire that led to the civilian's death.

Multiple media organizations reported the shooting happened around midnight in the parking lot of a Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant in Greenville. Tsombe Jashon Clark, 25, of Robersonville, died later Saturday, police spokeswoman Kristen Hunter said.

Officials say Officer Gary Barrett was picking up a carry-out order at the restaurant when he was asked to stop a fight involving several people that started inside and spilled into the parking lot.

Barrett identified himself to people involved, but one man pointed a gun and fired. The officer then returned fire.

The State Bureau of Investigation is on the case because it involves a law officer.

Barrett is a 20-year veteran of the Greenville Police Department and is currently assigned to the motorcycle unit.
