STATESVILLE, N.C. — An off-duty Iredell County deputy was killed Wednesday in a crash involving another deputy.

Authorities said Deputy Justin Betts had slowed down to make a left turn into a parking lot on Taylorsville Highway at about 1:40 p.m. when he collided with Corp. Bill Wood, who was off-duty and riding a motorcycle.

Authorities said Wood, who had been employed by the sheriff’s office since 2007, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said Betts will be placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation into the cause of the crash.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
