Teens might just be living inside their social media accounts these days, especially during the pandemic when it's difficult to meet up with others in person. But they shouldn't just see it as an opportunity to stay in touch with friends. It could help them on their journey to whatever is next.

Durham-based The Social Institute will be hosting a webinar March 18 with more information about how social media can help as they seek admission to college or get a job.

“Many high schoolers work hard on grades and extracurricular activities to get into college, but they don’t often consider that a positive social media presence is another tool that can help them stand out among their peers,” said Laura Tierney, CEO and Founder of The Social Institute. “This webinar will reveal tips and strategies students can start using right away to sharpen their online presence and take charge of their future.”

Game-Planning for Social Media, College Admissions and Future Employment is 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., March 18. It's free. A recording of the session will be made available if you can't make it at the scheduled time.

The webinar will feature Tierney, along with Greg Victory, executive director of the Duke University Career Center and Paul Petrone with LinkedIn Learning.

Topics to be covered will include:

  • How colleges view social media for applicants, students, and alumni
  • How social networks factor into part-time and full-time job searches
  • How students can utilize LinkedIn to set themselves apart from the competition
  • How educators can embrace social media as a resource to drive student success
To sign up, head over to The Social Institute's website.
