North Carolina's three aquariums will reopen to the public on Monday, Sept. 14. The reopening comes as North Carolina moves into Phase 2.5 of its reopening plan during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and other museums across the state also begin welcoming visitors again.

“We can’t wait to be able to do what we do best, which is share the truly astounding animals and habitats we care for,” said Maylon White, North Carolina Aquariums director, said in a press release. “The public is a key component in our mission of education and inspiration, and we’ll be so happy to have them back.”

The reopening includes some new procedures to keep guests, staff and animals safe, according to the press release. Those changes include:

  • To limit the number of people inside the buildings, aquarium admission will be available online only at ncaquariums.com, and guests must reserve their tickets for specific arrival times.
  • Guests and employees must wear face coverings and maintain social distancing.

Aquarium leaders have spent the last week or so bringing back staff and preparing the grounds for visitors. The destinations at Kure Beach, Pine Knoll Shores and Manteo all closed on March 17 as part of an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus. During that time, staff cared for aquarium animals and shared educational content and videos online with families and fans.

More information is on the aquarium's website.
