BUXTON, N.C. — The nor'easter that hit the East Coast over the weekend caused flooding along the Outer Banks and closed N.C. Highway 12 between the Bonner Bridge and Rodanthe. The road was also closed near Ocracoke.

Kevin Humbrecht, of Buxton, said the sand, water and debris have caused some serious problems.

"My house just rocked. It's been rocking for three straight days," he said.

Photos and video from the Outer Banks community of Avon show flooded swimming pools and waves reaching the porches of beach homes.

Humbrecht shot drone video in Avon after the wind and pounding surf erased protective dunes, depositing the sand on exposed properties and in pools.

"We've had 30, 40, 50 mph winds consistently for a long period of time," he said. "I'm just surprised at the quantity and the volume of water and debris. The last few hurricanes didn't bring this much sand."

Video and pictures up and down the Outer Banks document the impact. N.C. 12 shut down in both directions north of Rodanthe because of the over wash.

"We've had almost zero rain. I don't think it's rained at all, if it has it's been a light sprinkle in the last three days easily. Most of this is just high wind churning the water up and pushing it in on us pretty hard," Humbrecht said.

North from Nags Head to Corolla also took a windy beating. The prolonged pounding flooded roads and chewed away at the fragile coastline. But, the locals have been here and done this before and cleanup starts now.

"Locals are used to this. They know what to do. They ride it out and then they hit it," Humbrect said.
