Pittsboro, N.C. — A deer hunter fired the shot heard Monday morning that caused a lockdown at Northwood High School, according to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office.
Deer hunting season started over the weekend, and the wooded area where the shot was reported is known to draw local hunters.
Deputies searched the woods near the school while rumors of a shooter spread among students and parents.
“We have located the hunter as well as the deer,” said Maj. Charles Gardner of the sheriff’s office. “After speaking with the hunter and reviewing the area and evidence, we have determined that no laws were violated and no charges will be sought following this incident.”
