RALEIGH, N.C. — Nikki Haley, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and governor of South Carolina, will be the featured speaker at Elon University's fall convocation on Sept. 27, according to the school's website.

A native of Bamberg, S.C., Haley is the daughter of Indian immigrants and a graduate of Clemson University. In 2010, she became the first woman and first minority to be elected governor of South Carolina. She won re-election in 2014.

In October, President Donald Trump announced Haley's resignation as ambassador and praised her as a "fantastic person" who has "done an incredible job."

Haley called serving as ambassador "an honor of a lifetime," but added that it was time for her to depart the administration. She is currently writing a book about her life and leadership that will come out this fall, her publisher announced last month.
