RALEIGH, N.C. — The fall weather sticks around through the weekend, and the mountains of western North Carolina may even see a glimpse of winter, WRAL meteorologist Kat Campbell said.

"A few flurries will be possible tomorrow night in the northern NC mountains," Campbell said. "There won't be accumulation, but it's still wild to think about!"

In the Triangle, Saturday will start out damp and end up clear but cool.

"It will be overcast with a good chance of showers during the morning and early afternoon," Campbell said.

The high temperature will only reach the mid- to upper-60s.

It will be even cooler on Sunday, with a high temperature in the upper 50s and a low in the 30s. It stays clear and cool through the work week, with a chance of rain creeping back in for Friday.

Don't get too cozy, though. The long-term winter forecast issued this week by the National Weather Service calls for a warmer than normal winter across much of the United States.

No part of the country is expected to be colder than normal, said Mike Halpert, deputy director of the government's Climate Prediction Center.

Overall the winter looks a lot like the last few, Halpert said.

"The country as a whole has been quite mild since 2014-2015," Halpert said.

Winter weather expert Judah Cohen, of the private company Atmospheric and Environmental Research, uses different indicators to predict winter for the National Science Foundation. He also forecasted a warm winter, heavily based on weak snowfall in Siberia.
