CAROLINA BEACH, N.C. — The New Hanover Sheriff's Office has identified a 10-year-old boy who drowned off Carolina Beach on Saturday as Master Emanuel Carter, of Sanford.

Master went missing while swimming with his parents and a 15-year-old brother around 2 p.m., said Deputy C.G. Smith, a spokesman for the sheriff's office. Coast Guard officials said the family was caught in a rip tide, and the boy disappeared in the surf.

Lifeguards rescued the parents and teenager but couldn't find Master, Smith said.

A Coast Guard helicopter located him about two hours later. Master was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
