ROCKINGHAM, N.C. — State Rep. Melanie Goodwin made history with a new addition to her family.

Goodwin gave birth Friday morning to Jackson Wade Goodwin at Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham. A spokeswoman for the Goodwins said mother and baby are doing fine.

Melanie Goodwin and her husband, Wayne, already have a young daughter.

The Goodwins say she is the first state lawmaker to give birth while holding office, and officials at the General Assembly have found no information to contradict the claim.

It was unclear whether Melanie Goodwin will return to her legislative duties before the General Assembly reconvenes May 13.

Wayne Goodwin is running for insurance commissioner in next week's Democratic primary.

Melanie Goodwin is running unopposed for a third House term to represent Montgomery and Richmond counties.
