POLKTON, N.C. — Prison officials say one inmate is dead and one was injured in a fight at an Anson County correctional center.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety says the fight broke out around 1:30 p.m. Friday at Lanesboro Correctional Institution, which is a high-security prison in Polkton, about 45 miles southeast of Charlotte. It has 1,000 cells.

Spokeswoman Pamela Walker said the dead inmate, Wesley Turner, 35, was stabbed.

Records show Turner had served time for a number of offenses, including second-degree murder and assault on a public official. The records also show he attempted to break out of prison.

The injured inmate wasn't identified because of security reasons.

Walker said prison managers locked down the institution while the incident is investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation and the Anson County Sheriff's Office.
