NCDMV seeks tech overhaul to tackle long lines and outdated systems

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is seeking proposals from vendors to replace its outdated legacy systems, an effort spurred by a recent state auditor's report criticizing the department's long lines and inefficiencies.

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is asking for proposals to overhaul its legacy systems.

Vendors can submit their proposals on the state’s website until 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. However, the state is encouraging vendors to review the scope of the work and submit questions by 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29.

In early August, North Carolina State Auditor Dave Boliek gave new context to the department's challenges toward providing timely service to customers at driver's license offices, a topic WRAL News has covered extensively.

Boliek provided a 435-page report about his office’s recommendations on how to make the DMV more efficient. It also outlined how to improve its processes through upgrading what Boliek called “a lack of detailed and measurably relevant metrics at the DMV."

Never-ending lines outside buildings and outdated technology are two things Boliek said aren’t acceptable in a state with a booming population and growing economy.

A letter written by DMV Commissioner Paul Tine and Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins responded to the report. Tine took over in May in replacement of Wayne Goodwin.

The DMV is a division of the state Department of Transportation, which answers to Democratic Gov. Josh Stein.
