On the day before the North Carolina legislative session opens, the coalition of groups known as HK on J, or Historic Thousands on Jones St., listed issues they would like to see protected as the state faces a steep budget deficit.

“North Carolina must not take one step backward from the progress we’ve made in education, health care, civil rights and social justice,” said state NAACP chief Rev. William Barber.
