N.C. Highway 12 has reopened in Hatteras, but the highway on Ocracoke Island remains closed Tuesday due to overwash, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT)
Most spots along N.C. 12 that were shut down this weekend, including on Hatteras, reopened Monday evening. The NCDOT said Hatteras is still seeing some standing water and sand in spots, so drivers should remain alert.

N.C. 12 remains closed between the Northern Ferry Terminal and the National Park Service Pony Pens. WITN reports extra equipment and crews arrived via ferry on Tuesday to help with extensive cleanup efforts at the Outer Banks.
Crews are working to reopen the highway in Ocracoke depending on Tuesday's high tide around 2:50 p.m. A NCDOT alert says the road is expected to open around 6 p.m.
The overwash and damage at the coast came as the result of a nor'easter that brought high surf, coastal flooding and wind gusts up to 60 mph to the Outer Banks over the weekend.
Several homes in Buxton collapsed into the ocean earlier this month as hurricanes passed offshore, and the recent combination of rain, overwash and winds puts more homes at risk of tumbling into the ocean.
