A murder investigation is underway after an inmate at Greene Correctional Institution was found dead on Sunday, WITN staff reports.
The Department of Adult Correction says Ernest Nichols was discovered in his cell block around 6:50 a.m.

On Tuesday, the Green County Sherriff's Office served Wilbert Baldwin with a murder warrant for Nichols' death. Baldwin was given no bond and returned to the Department of Adult Correction, the State Bureau of Investigation said.
The SBI said Baldwin was convicted in 2010 of second-degree murder. He is serving a sentence in the Greene Correctional Institution in Maury.
The 60-year-old Nichols was convicted in 2011 of statutory rape that happened in Mecklenburg County. He was projected to be released from prison in September 2027.
The prison was on a temporary lockdown as authorities investigate the death.
