The Fair starts this ... Thursday?!

Posted Updated

The Fair starts on Thursday. That's going to take some getting used to. After spending the last *coughcoughcough* years looking forward to the glorious First  Friday of the Fair, I now have to readjust my mind to a First Thursday. But hey, the more Fair the better, right?

Last year was the inaugural year of First Thursday, and it was a bit of a mess. The traffic was crazy, there weren't enough people to direct the inflow, and not everything was open or available. This year everybody has more notice and things seem a little more firmly in place.

Also last year on opening Thursday the gates did not open until the afternoon. It's the same this year, with the gates opening at 3pm (though there will be events at the Horse Complex all day.) If you're into the midway you might want to head out on Thursday; for $25 you can get a unlimited rides wristband for all rides open on the midway from 3:30 to midnight. That's a lot of tilting and whirling. More details on that at http://www.ncstatefair.org/2009/Tickets/PreviewDayWristband.htm.
Mike Moss' forecast this morning is resigning me to a bit of a soggy first few  days of the Fair, but I'm still looking forward to it. The rain and the cool weather will just make the hot cider taste better...
