When technology and craft contests collide

Be sure, when you visit the Fair, to go through the exhibit buildings that show the contest entrants and winners. It's one of my favorite parts of the Fair, partly because of the tremendous level of talent shown by the entries (some of the quilts are unbelievable!) and because of what people choose for subjects.

I was tickled to see that one of the needle work competition entries -- it won second place -- shows the ship Serenity from the TV series Firefly. It was done by Merrie B. Burnett of Raleigh. The picture I took doesn't do it justice; the needlework was very detailed.

Speaking of technology, one of the cake entries -- this one won first place -- was a reproduction of the older-style Game Boy Advance, complete with Super Mario. The buttons are even marked! (Unfortunately I couldn't see the name on that one.)

Maybe next year we'll see a Wii cake...
