The news comes after the Carolina Mudcats, the Carolina League baseball team that played at the stadium since 1991, announced a move to Wilson. The team will rebrand as the Wilson Warbirds.
Last year, Wilson leaders voted unanimously to approve a $69 million plan to build a new ballpark for the team near Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park. Wilson plans to have the new stadium ready for the team by the opening day of the 2026 season.
The Carolina Mudcats will have their last season at Five County Stadium in 2025. The first home game of the season is April 4 against the Fredericksburg Nationals.
Zebulon's Communication Director, Kaleb Harmon, said no idea is off limits.
"The beauty of this stadium is its many different uses. It is known for baseball, but we have seen concerts, festivals and marathons at this site. While we are dreaming, we will dream big," he said.
He said baseball is on the table, but there are also discussions of mixed-use development and other ideas.
Harmon said the town is currently working to launch a public engagement campaign.
"This is designed to hear feedback from their ideas. We can blend the request for proposals with the views of our residents and truly make the best decision," he said.
Potential investors can submit a proposal by February 28, 2025, by 4 p.m. EST.
