Warrant reveals new details about crash that killed 13-year-old at Cary crosswalk

A search warrant reveals new details about the Nov. 29 crash that killed a 13-year-old girl at a crosswalk in Cary.

The warrant said Shiyu "Chloe" Hua, 13, was walking with two other people when she was hit at the crosswalk on High House Road. 

57-year-old Adrian Holt was driving a garbage truck when the light turned solid green, according to the warrant, which means drivers need to yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians in the crosswalk. 

Hua and two others crossing the street realized the truck was not stopping, so they tried to run and jump out of the way, the warrant said.

One of the adults was able to get out of the way, and the second adult suffered minor injuries from being knocked down, according to the warrant.

Hua, unfortunately, was not able to get out of the way in time.

After hitting the 13-year-old, the warrant indicates Holt came to a stop before moving the truck forward and parking, further injuring Hua in the process.

A Wake County ambulance happened to drive by the scene before Cary emergency responders could get there, the warrant said. Hua died on her way to Duke University Hospital in Durham.

Holt has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon. He was also cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian and failing to reduce speed.

Holt informed officers he had a revolver in his work bag but no concealed carry permit, the warrant revealed. He told officers that he had completed the required class but had not completed the required paperwork at the sheriff's office to obtain the permit.
