When they arrived, they found a 56-year-old Ericka Lucas with injuries from a gunshot wound. She was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. WRAL is working to find out her updated condition.
According to police, she is the wife of Wake Forest High School football coach Reggie Lucas.
After a preliminary investigation, officers charged and arrested a 16-year-old in connection with this shooting. WFPD said that Lucas was not specifically targeted in this shooting. Instead, she was struck by gunfire meant for someone else who was also on East Nelson Avenue.
In addition, investigators said this incident was not a drive-by shooting. A neighbor told WRAL News on Saturday that they heard arguing between two teens and that Ericka Lucas was caught in the crossfire.
The 16-year-old has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill/inflict serious injury. Because this is an active investigation, officials are not releasing the name of the teenager and the school they attend.
Police did not provide any information on what led up to the shooting that was not intended for Lucas. WRAL News called Reggie Lucas and did not hear back.
