The Wake County Detention Center is beyond peak capacity, according to the sheriff's office.
The sheriff's office said 48 cells are currently under renovation, which has limited the space available.

The detention center is temporarily using beds called “EZ bunks” in common areas within dorms on top of platform bed sleep surfaces.
The sheriff says his office does not know whether Iryna's Law has resulted in any measurable increase in jail population, but his office is reviewing potential impacts that could be directly related to the law.
“Our mission is to manage our detention facility population while keeping our community, staff, and those in our care safe, while ensuring that we meet and exceed state standards,” Rowe’s statement read in part.
The sheriff’s office said these priorities highlight the importance of the “planned renovation” of the detention annex building and the future expansion of Wake County Detention Center.
“The project is expected to add hundreds of additional beds, along with updated infrastructure and enhanced security measures,” the statement continued.
