Wake County board chair to step down, will take job in governor's office

The chair of the Wake County Board of Commissioners is stepping down from his position.

Matt Calabria told WRAL News on Friday that he plans to take a job with Gov. Josh Stein’s administration.

Calabria did not say which position he would take in the governor’s office. An announcement is expected next week.

In 2014, Calabria was elected to the Wake County Board of Commissioners. He was elected in 2014 and reelected in 2018, 2020 and 2022. His term was set to expire in December 2026.

Calabria also served as the chair of the county’s Growth, Sustainability and Economic Strength Committee and the vice chair of the county’s Public Safety Committee. He was also a member of the Affordable Housing Committee.

On Wednesday, Stein was sworn in as North Carolina’s 76th governor.
