Morning. I'm meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. Today is a WRL weather alert day due to our air quality. Of course, we have smoke from the wildfires in Canada that are moving into our area. It started yesterday. It's all on a northerly wind and as long as our wind is coming out of the north, we're going to continue to see these smoggy conditions. So our air quality alert today is a code red from the triangle area northward and then south and west into the sand hills. That means that everybody should limit their time outdoors, ok, to be outside, but you don't want to really exert yourself. So no strenuous exercise outside really for anybody in the code orange area in the code red area, the code orange area, it's unhealthy for sensitive groups that's going to be young Children, the elderly, anybody with heart or lung issues. You don't want to overdo it outside in the code orange area, which is south and east of the triangle area. So let's take a look at what's happening tomorrow. We continue to have the potential for code orange conditions for tomorrow and Friday because our wind will continue to come out of the north for the next several days. This is a look at a model showing the smoke and you can see that the smoky conditions, the yellows and the oranges, they are showing up pretty intensely up through around lunchtime or early afternoon. After that, we have a cold front that comes through, that's going to bring us some rain and that's going to help to eliminate some of the smoke from the atmosphere during the late afternoon and even overnight. But then we get another push of it tomorrow. See the yellows and oranges again for Thursday. As long as we have that northerly wind which will continue on Thursday and Friday, we're going to have some of that smoke in our area. So let's take a look at the wind direction. We have a cold front that's going to slide down across our area behind the cold front. Our wind continues to come out of the north. That's going to be true today and tomorrow and then even Friday, there's a look at Friday at one o'clock still seeing that early flow. But by Saturday, a high pressure system zips by and switches our wind to southerly. You can see the red shaded areas that's going to start to push the smoke back to the north and it will stop it from coming here. So over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, our air quality should improve significantly. Not only do we have the air quality to worry about again. We have that front that's going to drop over us and bring us some rain first off this morning, it's going to be up near the Virginia. By early afternoon, it starts to move into the triangle and then gradually slides southward out of the viewing area. But we'll see our chances for rain increasing as we get through the afternoon. We check that seven day forecast again. Our weather alert day for today. A high of 81 will be cooler tomorrow. And Friday really, it should feel pretty pleasant except for the fact that we still have that smoke. Saturday and Sunday are hotter with that southwesterly flow, but the smoke should be over. We will have a chance of storms on Sunday.

Two are in custody after a shooting injured seven people Tuesday at a high school graduation being held near Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond

<p>Life threatening victim is 31 years old. I also mentioned last time that we had one person who was struck by a car, that individual was nine years old. She was treated at the scene and then released and subsequently went to a local hospital where she continues to have non life threatening wounds. I also mentioned last time that we had two subjects in custody. I'd like to clarify that at this 20.1 of the subjects was detained was armed with a firearm. But we believe based upon our investigation at this time that he is uninvolved in the shooting itself. We have another individual who is in custody, who is 19 years old who we believe was involved in the shooting. At this point. In consultation with the Richmond Commonwealth's attorney's office. We plan on seeking charges for second degree murder times two, for that individual with more potential charges to follow this time. I'd like to just express my concerns and sympathy for those who have lost their lives today and those whose lives were forever changed by the events today. I'd also like to thank the partners that rushed to the scene. The Richmond police officers, the VCU police, security and police officers, the Capitol police, Virginia state police, even in Rico. And certainly our state and federal partners, Virginia State Police as I mentioned, but certainly ATF FBI are all assisting in the complicated case that this is right now at this point. So we anticipate having a further update tomorrow. The mayor's office will be providing you all with updates on when that press conference will take place. I can answer a few questions here. I'm not going to be able to give a lot more detail than I've already provided, but I can answer a few. Could you talk about the expansiveness of the crime scene here? We see a lot of blocks in this area. Yes. Well, it obviously is a large scene. We always start out larger than we need and then bring it back. We anticipate we will be breaking down this crime scene within the next 20 or 30 minutes. Our forensic technicians have completed much of their work. They are re canvassing. We have canines looking for additional firearms and casings in case we missed any. But we feel pretty good about where we are forensically at this time. We anticipate breaking much of this down very shortly. Can you ID, the deceased or if not in their ages? At least the two deceased are an 18 year old male and a 36 year old male. We are not prepared to release the names at this point, but we will in days to come, the family, the families are obviously grieving at this point, they have been notified that was the hang up for us initially. But we'd like to, before we release those names, we'd like to give them a bit of time. She is not loaded at this point. Why would somebody do this? We think the suspect knew at least one of the victims, the gender of the suspects. That the subject is the 19 year old suspect is a male and I'm unclear if he's currently a student. Do you know what could you provide information on the type of weapon used? We've recovered handguns in this case? Multiple. Yes, the 18 year old that was the 18 year old, he was in a shop. Um Is that a student graduating today? One the victim in, in his thirties. Can you uh speak to? Is that a family member of a, of, of one of the graduates? He was here for the graduation? We'll be releasing more of that tomorrow. What happened after the shooting with the suspects? Did they retreat or run to the parking garage or where were they at? Where they get? So as I mentioned earlier, we had three off duty Richmond police officers working the event itself. They were outside directing traffic and we had seven along the Belvedere corridor blocking traffic so that people could get in and out as they heard the gunfire. It was obviously chaos. We had hundreds of people in Monroe Park so people scattered. It was very chaotic at the scene. I can tell you that the person we believe is the who is going to be charged was detained initially by security and was taken into custody and he is currently at the Richmond Police Department. Did that happen? Like here in the park or you left close by, he fled the scene and then was taken into custody. Now in our custody are all police personnel uninjured in this appearance. Yes, no, no officers were injured. No officers discharged their weapons. Did the suspect flee in the car or, and as I mentioned earlier, but it's getting clear. Now at this point, we don't believe we're not looking for anyone else at this time. We do. However, we know that there were hundreds of people out here that may have some of this captured on videotape. So we would ask folks to contact the Richmond Police Department and we will set up a hotline by tomorrow where if they have video, they'd like to share with us, we can put that out there. But I'm sure plenty of folks were out here celebrating the day taking videos, taking pictures and they may have valuable information. Obviously, there's plenty of cameras here that we're in the process of reviewing. That's a laborious process. But we would ask the public if they have something like that, please share it with us. Apologies. I missed this earlier is the suspect have a connection to the high school that was graduating and was the suspect known to police prior to this evening? That's all part of the investigation. I'm not aware of. He was 19 years old, so I don't believe he was graduating and he wasn't known to police prior. I'm not sure about that chief. How many weapons were, were found today in relation. So with the individual we detained, there were a total of four firearms seized. So one of them is completely unrelated and we're investigating and that's going to be part of the investigation. We will be utilizing to determine which firearms were directly involved and which were, there was, there was guns on the city that we were from, were these handguns or were these like an automatic, I believe these were all handguns at this point. Do you know if they were all legally obtained? We're still very early in the investigation. But that will be part of what we're going to ask from our investigators. As I said, we're getting help from the Bureau of Alcohol, tobacco farms and explosives as well as the FBI and Virginia State police are and BC police that are all part of that active investigation with what we're doing right now. Can you speak to the three officers that we hear on location? How is their moved? How are they dealing with the situation? Well, it's certainly traumatic for them. I heard the call come over my radio and you could hear the chaos and the screaming. So we will be following up with them. But they saw obviously they saw two people in dire straits and who eventually died. And then a 14 year old child who was also wounded. So it was chaotic and then it was also very complicated. The early reports are always challenging. So we had reports of many more people because people were having panic attacks, falling on the ground, screaming as I mentioned before, some people fell, one child was hit by a car. So this was a very chaotic scene. But our officers with our partners in very short order started to make sense of the chaos, getting folks the resources they needed and preparing for an event like this. We've prepared for it with our partners and hoping that this day wouldn't come. But it came to Richmond today. And what do you say to the community? You know, we heard of this at churches, parks, movie theaters where first time at a graduation, I've heard of what do you say to folks who just want to live life every day and be in public and not be terrified to do that? Well, you know, obviously this should have been a safe space that people should have felt safe at the graduation. Superintendent, cameras mentioned that and it's just incredibly tragic that someone decided to bring a gun to this incident and reign terror on our community and talking to people who perpetrate or commit these kind of crimes around everyone else. What do you want to say to those people who are involved in this kind of activity? It's disgusting and cowardly behavior because even if you're discharging a firearm and a person, you're trying to hit when you have a crowd like this, innocent people are going to be caught up in the mayhem. And that's what happens. How long was the incident in total from when gunfire broke out when the suspect was apprehended? I don't have that information, but I can tell you that we had two, the responding officers who were on the perimeter blocking traffic as they are now, they were on scene within a, within less than 45 seconds I would say, and the gunfire had stopped. So the initial officers indicated there was a barrage of gunfire but it was over relatively quickly. The victims that were struck. Were they standing on the sidewalk just outside the theater? All the victims were outside the theater and we believe all the gunfire took place outside the theater. I can tell you that Monroe Park, as I mentioned earlier was full of hundreds of people celebrating the day taking photographs with their loved ones when gunfire rang out and a crowd of people ran in every direction as you can expect. Were people struck in Monroe Park or on the sidewalk near the theater. I'm not exactly sure where they were struck, but they were definitely outside, somewhere, somewhere in Monroe Park, somewhere further along the sidewalk, I believe. But I'm not exactly sure. Do you have anything to say about this situation? Especially as we approach the department's initiative with operations? Well, I think we need to work on this. Obviously, there's too many people in our city who have been shot. So right now this will be, this will be our 33rd murder with the two individuals today and too many people were shot and wounded. So that's why we started that. We have a planning meeting tomorrow with our partners for operation safe summer. We're going to redouble our efforts and do our best to keep our community safe. Can you confirm that the victims are father and son at this point? I'm not prepared to confirm that this gang related. I don't believe so. I believe that the individuals, some of them knew each other at this point. I'm going to go ahead and stop. I appreciate everyone's patience today. We will have more to say with the mayor tomorrow. A shooting was reported Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University where Richmond, Va., public schools were holding graduation ceremonies at the Altria Theater. 

You're watching on your side at six breaking news outside of the rea theater. Thank you. Now, I got you. Probably at my size, 30 size. So great. He's like everyone and like we get in touch with each other going on at the Yeah. Right. It was really scary. I got almost like out here. Um, there are some so, um, I know very good that I Colin Mia, we're standing on the West Franklin street side of Monroe Park you can see here still very active. My photographer Tyler is going to zoom in there. You can see the crowds there on the other side of the park. They're gathering that is near where I parked and I spoke to a witness. He tells me his son was graduating and him and his sister were inside or outside the Altria Theater when they heard about 8 to 10 gunshots go off. They first thought it was fireworks from what they were saying. But as soon as they turn around, they told me they saw several people hurt and that's when the reality set in. They were just very shooken up. His sister started crying on camera to me. Just very shooken up over what happened. And again, we're outside Monroe Park here on the West Franklin Street side, you can see the crime scene tape up surrounding the park there as investigators line the front of the Altria Theater there in the distance. And again, we're still working to learn more details about what happened. But a lot of people could. Those two I spoke to as I parked here getting to the scene were just very shooken up just asking the very big question why this happened. And that's what we continue to ask investigators as they work to get more details about this case. But again, 8 to 10 gunshots from what these two witnesses told me going off after the graduation ceremony here in Monroe Park. And again, we're working to still learn more details about this case. And just as a reminder too here, there's many roads blocked here. It took me about 10, 15 more minutes to get into town downtown than it was before because of these road closures. So again, just make sure you are aware of that too if you're heading into this area. But this crime scene, you know, does remain very active at this point. Law enforcement just surrounding the park here according to what I saw as I parked here. So again, just a very active scene, two witnesses tell me they heard between 8 to 10 gunshots go off. They thought it was fireworks at first but as soon as they turned around, that's when the reality set in for them at that moment too. You'll have it on your side in Richmond, Desmona NBC News here quite a day. You all right. Yeah. To ask around and see what else I can learn. And we are waiting for more information live and on your side in Richmond, Jennifer Blake NBC News accounts from folks who were there. It says graduation was letting out. Yeah, I do. And you know, I kind of want to start off too. This has been just a scene with very heavy emotions. I've seen people just embracing each other here right next to us before we went live. Just a lot of people here very shooken up about what just unfolded here. You can see here still behind me, a very active investigation. We're on the other side of where Henry is. You can see just the whole entire side here of Monroe Park taped off as investigators lined the street right in front of the Altria Theater. And again, as I was speaking about, many people shook up too, I spoke to two people as I was parking here at Altria Theater, Jason Alexander, he tells me his son was graduating and when they were outside the theater, he heard between 8 to 10 gunshots go off. Obviously, he was very emotional. Just heard the bullets just flying right past him and just in that moment, they were just very emotional. His sister was also with him. And as you can imagine, just a very emotional time here at the scene for those who heard it. And again, they thought it was just fireworks going off in that moment too. They had no idea what was going on. But, you know, as they looked around too, they started to see several people hurt in that meantime, and again, we don't have a lot of that confirmation yet, but they did tell me there were several people here injured on the scene as well too and they were walking back to their car just full of emotions. But thankfully, Jason Alexander does tell me the rest of their family and his son are safe tonight as well too and we're keeping tabs here. Not a lot has changed on our side of Monroe Park. Just a lot of law enforcement blocking West Franklin Street here. We don't see a lot of, you know, cars passing by here. We do see a lot of pedestrians, you know, a lot of students coming out, you know, from their housing, which is right here behind my photographer Tyler just, you know, trying to see what the scene is here too and also embracing each other as well too. So we're going to be working here all night to get more information for you as soon as we learn more. We'll bring you that live as well on our website NBCC 12 dot com. I spoke to him as I was parking my car, him and his sister were shaking up after hearing those 8 to 10 gunshots go off after the graduation ceremony. He tells me his son was part of that Huot high school ceremony. And after words, he heard those what sounded like fireworks going off. And again, he did not know the situation at hand until he turned around and just started seeing what was reality there. And again, we want to show you a live look here of this, seen, not a lot has changed since we last came to you. We're on the West Franklin street side of Monroe Park. You can see off the distance kind of a couple of feet away. You know, fire trucks still remain there and just a few feet down, you can see a large group of people of what it looks like, first responders gathered over there as well. And this has been the scene of what it's looked like for the past hour. This is kind of the same area where I spoke to Jason Sander and his sister before they went to go find their car. And thankfully, they tell me that their son is ok and that thankfully the rest of their family members are safe again as well. And we're still working to learn more information about, you know, the potential injuries in this case too. But from what Jason Alexander was telling me on the scene, he saw several people hurt again. A lot of information we're still working to get in that as well. But you know, the just a lot of emotions as I talked to him on camera, him and his sister were very shaken up over what unfolded outside of the graduation ceremony as well too. And as Kin, Mia said, per City Hall, there is no more threat. We're hearing some sirens going off here in the distance. A lot of police cars just lining the, you know, main street around here as well too, right off of Belvedere. Again, the whole park surrounded by crime seen tape, you can see Richmond fire here in front of some BCU housing units for students as well too. So again, a very active police scene as well too. We're working to learn more details. The roads are closed around this area too. We've been seeing a lot of pedestrians here and a lot of emotions. You know, as many people just embrace just a lot of groups of people, you know, trying to figure out what is going on as well too. And just, you know, worth noting as well too. Again, the roads are closed. A lot of police presence here along Belvedere here along West Franklin Street where we're standing as well to, you know, Richmond fire over here as well. So again, we're working to learn more details about what exactly unfolded outside of the Altria Theater here and we'll be sure to bring you those updates as soon as Richmond police hold their press conference and provide those updates to us as well. You know, as, as soon as they heard, you know, what sounded like those fireworks going off, I think they just kind of everyone hit the ground because it was just a moment that they told me that, you know, they did not know what was going, going on. Everyone hit the ground from what they were saying and that they were still trying to process what exactly unfolded in that moment again, they heard between 8 to 10 gunshots go off. So Kurt, a lot of that information is still we're working to learn more about. I believe they did tell me again that it was a pedestrian, but a lot of that is still unconfirmed tonight. So I'll be trying to talk to a couple more people out here on the scene too to try and get a sense, you know, for what exactly unfolded as investigators work this case here too. Thank you. Oh.
